관계부사
관계부사는 접속사+부사의 역할을 한다. 전치사+관계대명사는 선행사의 종류에 따라 관계부사로 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. 선행사가 시간이면 when, 장소이면 where, 방법이면 how, 이유이면 why를 쓸 수 있다. 또한 이들 네 가지 모두를 관계부사 that이 대신할 수 있다.
Patterns: ① 시간/장소 n+when/where+S+V ② 이유 n+why+S+V
1. 관계부사 종류
There are moments. + I forget all about it then.
= There are moments when I forget all about it.
= There are moments at which I forget all about it.
(그것을 완전히 잊어버린 순간이 있다.)
The place is called its habitat. + An animal lives there.
The place where an animal lives is called its habitat.
= The place in which an animal lives is called its habitat.
(동물이 사는 장소는 서식지라 부른다.)
Is this the reason? + He refused our offer for the reason.
Is this the reason why he refused our offer?
= Is this the reason for which he refused our offer?
(이것이 그가 우리의 제안을 거부한 이유입니까?)
Science has affected the way we look at life.
= Science has affected how we look at life.
(과학은 우리가 인생을 바라보는 방법에 영향을 미쳤다.)
the way how는 같이 쓸 수 없으므로 (how)를 생략하고 S+V만 사용하거나 또는 the way를 생략하고 how S+V를 사용한다.

→ I can’t understand the reason why you let me go.
[해석] 나는 네가 날 가도록 한 이유를 이해할 수 없다.
5. They got married in 2000. He finished his master’s degree in marketing at that time.
→ They got married in 2000, when he finished his master’s degree in marketing.
[해설] 2000년에 있었던 일에 대한 부가적인 설명이므로 관계부사 앞에 콤마가 오는 비제한적 용법이다.
[해석] 그들이 2000년에 결혼했을 때 그는 마케팅 석사 학위를 끝마쳤다.
